Kiley Reid

3.88 AVERAGE

This is an important book because it addresses the dangers of implicit bias and performative activism. Kiley Reid makes a loud statement on our current system of social injustice but in a subtle way. I liked the writing (f-bombs and all) because it made the characters very real for me, and the characters are well developed, with detailed back stories. They are also flawed and complex. At various points I would like a character and then they would do something questionable that left me shaking my head, which I think is a good representation of how real people and real life actually are. These moments are nuanced, and made me think. Books that make me think are the best kind of books. My favorite character by far is Briar, the sweet, serious, curious, energetic three year old; and the narrator of this audio played her well. In fact the whole audio was sensational. Highly recommend.

3.5 stars? Definitely ENGAGING, reminds me a lot of the sort of Big Little Lies or Little Fires Everywhere PTA-moms-being-terrible-to-each-other thriller-style books, which I do want to be clear, i ENJOY immensely. I think mainly this book is not super DEEP which is kind of a shame
