A thoughtful page turner. Complex insights into race and class and privilege and the trials of young adulthood. Appreciated the nuanced portrayal of all the characters as neither good or bad, but flawed humans.

writing didn’t work well with me, it felt very cringey and i didn’t care about any of the characters or relationships. isn’t a bad book it’s just not for me.

I had to check this book out 3 separate times to finally finish it so that should tell you I shouldn’t have bothered after not finishing the first 3 week span

I’m not sure how I feel about this book. Relief that it’s over? Embarrassment? Frustration? All of the above? One of the main characters is so bracingly self-absorbed while trying to appear “woke” that I had to shake my head repeatedly while reading. It’s a cute story, nonetheless, and Emira and Briar’s relationship was fun to watch develop.

good easy book club read. end of book was wrapped up quickly and awkwardly

If it was 20% more serious in tone this probably would have been a knockout. Very well nuanced take on race and class relations in both intimate and public settings, both the white and black characters felt real in ways that these kinds of books rarely do; also a level of empathy is afforded to the perspectives of all involved for our main characters (although the side pieces are decisively and enjoyable window dressing stereotypes). Heavy subjects with a light touch, a difficult needle to thread
