Max has a big not like other girls complex in this that I don't love. And it was NOT a prequel, it was a retelling of season 2(?) of ST from her POV. It was cute and fun but I think I would've liked it better if I'd just seen the season.

I adore Max so it was awesome to see more things from her point of view, but a huge percent of the book was just her rehashing everything that happened in season 2. However, it was interesting to learn more about her Dad, see more interactions with Billy, and hear her point of view on everything.

“i told myself it wasn’t my fault, that this is what it meant to live with the monster standing right behind you. even though it’s yours-your the one it’s after, standing in its shadow, it will still take a wide nasty swipe at anyone who gets close enough. and along the way, it’s everyone else that dies.”

max baby girl u better pull through WE NEED YOU!!! also fuck billy

they had the opportunity with this book to explore max’s background and family issues and generally just do a deep character study, but instead 70% of this book was just transcribed versions of the scenes in season 2. even the bits of her background that were explored felt incomplete and not very well connected. overall, a disappointing read.
