An interesting play, not quite a tragedy since it manages to turn itself around, but very much focused on grief, loss, and betrayal. The character Gower is a unique narrator who inserts himself to transport the audience across decades and several countries. The classic deus ex machina with Diana at the end leads to reuniting Thaisa with her family, just in time for a wedding. Ultimately, a happy story, just a decent amount of suffering along the way.

What an interesting play. [b:Pericles|104813|Pericles|William Shakespeare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1347947630l/104813._SY75_.jpg|781082] is a very emotional story that is vast in scope with numerous locations and a wide cast of characters.
Spoiler As I was reading this I went from disgust in the beginning from Antiochus’ actions to joy with the family reunion and happy ending
. I enjoyed the narrator, Gower, which helped me to keep track of the action - lots of moving parts in this play but it is a good one.

I vaguely remember learning about the Peloponnesian War in Western Civilization class. The historical character, Pericles, was an Athenian leader during that war. I’ve enjoyed these historical plays like [b:Julius Caesar|13007|Julius Caesar|William Shakespeare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1503315493l/13007._SY75_.jpg|2796883], [b:Cymbeline|305510|Cymbeline|William Shakespeare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1418615076l/305510._SY75_.jpg|745601], and this one among many others.

I’m finally down to one final play to read ([b:Antony and Cleopatra|104837|Antony and Cleopatra|William Shakespeare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1347795799l/104837._SY75_.jpg|717119]) to complete my personal challenge to read [b:The Complete Works of William Shakespeare|764563|The Complete Works of William Shakespeare|William Shakespeare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1371515067l/764563._SY75_.jpg|3000541] this year.

2-Pericles: Prince of Tyre by William Shakespeare (Audio/E Book-Play) 5* I listened to the Arkangel full cast recording of the play while reading the text from the Delphi Complete Works of Shakespeare E book and was delighted with the experience. The recording was performed by professional Shakespearean actors complete with musical instruments and sound effects. It brought that added dimension to the play and spirit of the work. Pericles tells the story of a Prince who leads anything but a normal life and definitely should avoid the open seas at all costs. I don't want to give more of the story away, but it is a good one and considered a comedy for all the bad luck that befalls the protagonist-he lives so it's not a tragedy. I was entertained and enjoyed the play immensely. This is an excellent way to enjoy Shakespeare.
11-2-2024 I listened to Pericles performed by the Marlowe Professional players Audible production and thought it was excellent once again.
