The writing style was a bit odd, didn't flow super well and was from the perspective of the main character but at times felt like it was from the perspective of a child?? However the descriptions were exceptional, very poetic and impactful. It was a bit intense at the beginning with how many characters were being introduced, I didn't really feel much attachment to anyone besides the main character. The mystery to be solved had me confused and determined to continue reading to find answers. The plot twist at the end wasn't something I would have ever guessed. The book also touched on a series of deep real world themes such as mental health, racism, classism etc. Overall an entertaining and emotional book, would recommend.

pretty sure this book gave me whiplash

i will say i was slightly surprised at the plot twist, it wasnt like “OMGGG THEYRE ALL DEAD OMG WHATTTT?,” it was more like “oh really? thats actually interesting” but it becamse more and more predictable at the talk of the house fire

a lot of the book didnt make sense to me.. i couldn’t tell what was a metaphor and what was literal its not very memorable, the only things i remember are cadance hits her head in some accident and cant remember stuff and she was seeing the ghosts of her dead cousins and bf or something

the whole book was confusing but my reasons for giving it a very generous 2 stars are

1. the plot twist was actually interesting
2. i enjoyed rhe writing style and how language flowed
3. touched on real world struggles like racism, abuse, and generational trauma (also affluenza if i may add)

(4.25) I am UPSET :( However, the way all the random oddities that took place in the first half of the book suddenly all snap into place and become crystal clear is truly genius.

I found this books to be captivating, i couldn't put it down. I ended up finishing this in a day. Definitely worth a read. The book is centred around the sinclair family , where they meet up every summer on the family private island. However on the fifteenth Cadence , the oldest grandchild, is involved in an accident ,which result in painful migraines. Two year later , she come backs to the island to understand what actually happened during that summer.
