Loved it. A perfect mixture of horror & coziness. Some unexpected twists and turns. I have yet to find a book by Darcy Coates that I didn't like.

Good ghost story with an interesting back story for the ghosts.
I liked the plot and the way it strung out slowly. It was a creative take on the haunted house trope. The setting in horroris always very important, and this book has it all. An overgrown deserted garden? Check! A crumbling mausoleum? Check! A spooky, ancient family home left to slowly decay? Yup! Something mysterious locked in the tower where you are never allowed to go? Check, check, check!
I don’t get scared by ghost or monster stories usually, so I didn’t find it frightening, but fear is well described in the book as is the feeling of uncanniness that denotes the supernatural is present.
I loved the ending and how things are
neatly tied up.  Iwuld have loved a further epilogue years down the road that showed Daniel married with kids who played with the ghost

The only thing limiting my enjoyment of the book was that the characters seemed a bit one dimensional. The main character is just too naive and forgiving to feel real. I wish the author had found a way to make the action take place without him being so gullible. It took me out of the story because I was so frustrated with him. This is especially true because he is such a kind, caring and decent person - something that is often lacking in main characters in horror. Kyle, is cousin, has no redeeming features. He learns nothing and is loyal to nobody. Most humans, even if they are not great people, aren’t completely devoid of any redeeming features.
Even Bran, the spirit seems waaaaaay too forgiving and tolerant of Daniel.

Otherwise I would have rated this a 4.  Good book for spooky season or a vacation in an old house.

Not my favorite book by this author. I was looking for something creepy, and this one just didn't do it for me

Meh, more of the same.

I read this book in the span of 2 days and I loved it! For my first time reading a Darcy Coates book I’d say this was probably the best choice. I’ll definitely be reading more of her work! This book definitely had some suspense. It’s a perfect read for spooky season. It’s everything I expected it to be!

I am disappointed by this one. It had such high reviews. I guess I'm a snob but I'm just used to a more mature style of writing. This just felt very amateurish and awkward to me. And all the reviews saying it was too scary. . .I must be desensitized because it didn't do anything for me at all. Oh, well.
