WARNING: This comic book will give you a book hangover!

I was worried when I first saw that there was an origin story comic of Aquaman's queen. In most of the earlier aquaman comics I was able to get my hands on, she was just another one of the superhero girl friends. True, she was a queen (literally), aquaman's wife, and had powers of her own but nothing was ever really fleshed out with her. I didn't know I've been waiting for the queen of Atlantis' origin story but I have. THIS is the story I've been waiting for.

I don't know how I've gotten so lucky to have so many 5 star books this year!

What the, how did this turn into romeo and juliet?

3.5/5 stars

Received a free digital ARC from NetGalley.
Cute origin story, but the insta-love between Mera and Arthur was really jarring. Very fast-paced and the characters seems rushed and one-dimensional, but I'm not sure it could have been done better at 186 pages. I would have rather read a longer (like, twice as long) story that took more time to develop Mera's relationships and maybe a bit longer than 4 days for her to change trajectories so completely.

I understand that the DC Ink range is an alternate continuity but this is the weakest I've read so far. I'm not sure why they chose to change the atlantean design and make them all dark haired and eyed as opposed to the iconic blonde/blue eyed aquaman. I enjoyed the art and perhaps this choice was to make her hair more of a ginger contrast?

I didn't like the choice of making her love interest from The Trench either and the double love triangle storyline didn't really work for me. It was just rather eh once I had finished, which is a shame because this range has led to some brilliant stories otherwise.

This feels like the weakest of the DC Ink stories I've read so far. There were major gaps in the narrative and confusing continuity issues. None of the characters were very well developed and despite the intro that claimed this would give Mera a story distinct from her romance with Aquaman, literally the entire story is a romance disguised as the world's briefest and poorly designed assassination plot.

Aquaman was always a fun sort of superhero, and this is his origin story, told from the viewpoint of Mera, his future wife.

Mera, who wants to murder him, so that she can have the throan to herself.

And goes out to do so, and well, insta-love, one of my most hated devices.

It is a weird story, with all this angst about how could he be so nice, and how could she still kill him, and oh dear, she is falling in love with him.

I got bored.

And Arther, Aquaman, does not have black hair. It is all very strange.

The characters are a bit wooden and stereotyped. It is all a mess of potage, and a not a good origin story.

Sorry, for those who were expecting more, like I was.

To preface, I don't really care about superhero things; I don't watch Marvel or DC movies or typically read their comic books. The art style is gorgeous-that is usually the first thing that will catch my eye. The story is for middle-grade, or YA so I'm also not the intended audience for such a book.

This focuses on Mera, sea princess (I guess?), who is coming of age during a time of unrest in Atlantis-ruled by her father. We don't really get much information on the ongoing war except the King has ordered troops to kill Arthur (Aquaman). It's a bit farfetched that Mera happens to find Arthur by happenstance when he doesn't really know who he is, or his heritage. Plus there is also the instalove, which I'm not a fan of, but it is skewed toward a younger audience.

Overall, not bad but does not entice me to read more in the series or explore the lore of those characters.

In short this is simply a child friendly comic based on DC Aquaman.

Although so of the content and themes were great to see and gave the fantasy world a wonderful atmosphere of relevancy, I found the plot line boring, cliché and too heavily focused on the romance element.

I was hoping for more and, although technically a sound story, it just didn't really leave me with any feeling at all.

The art style was classically superhero and gave me a sweet nostalgia which I did enjoy.
