Powerful, engaging and deeply saddening; I cannot recommend Just Mercy enough. Just Mercy was one of the most moving literary works I have ever read. It truly opened my eyes to the inequality, mistreatment and flaws of within our justice system. I often found myself needing to put the book down and take a break because it was so challenging to read. The stories that impacted me most were the stories in the chapter titled “All God’s Children.” The chapter told the stories of several children who were tried as adults and received a sentence to life without parole. The chapter explained their suffrage through years of solitary confinement, abuse and mistreatment. As difficult as it was to read these stories, it was uplifting to know that the author, Bryan Stevenson, had made such an impact on the lives of these children, and the lives of children to come by winning a ruling holding that it is unconstitutional to sentence children under the age of 17 who have not committed murder to life without parole. Stevenson’s book truly opened my eyes to the flaws in the American justice system, and is a must-read for all people, regardless of their usual preferred genre.

Everyone should read this book. Powerful, heartbreaking and really makes you take a look at your own understanding of the word mercy.

"So many of us have become afraid and angry. We've become so fearful and vengeful that we've thrown away children, discarded the disabled and sanctioned the imprisonment of the sick and the weak - not because they are a threat to public safety or beyond rehabilitation but because we think it makes us seem tough and less broken. In fact, there is a strength, a power even in understanding brokenness, because embracing our brokenness creates a need and desire for mercy, and perhaps a corresponding need to show mercy. When you experience mercy, you learn things that are hard to learn otherwise. You begin to recognize the humanity that resides in each of us."
