They Both Die at the End is a masterclass in world building and detail work, and the format really, really works. definitely not a lighthearted book by any means (shocking, i know, for a book with this title), but there’s a lot of joy and life packed into these pages.

This book was a sabotage for a heartbreak since the beginning. I mean even the title explains how the story ends, but we all had that hope that in the end they would somehow someway defeat death. This book was a masterpiece it explained how we should always live life to the fullest in every moment, and to take risks no matter the outcome. This books at its core is a reflection on how everyday people should live their lives. The overall characters and story line and how it ended left me in pieces!

My biggest gripe with this book is the forgettability of it and the severe issues of pacing. For only taking place across a single day, the plot feels like it occurs painfully slow. Way too much time is spent with a character just contemplating something.

None of the characters feel that distinct and while you understand each character's motivation I just could not bring myself to care about any of them.

The premise of the world is really interesting but the amount we actually get to explore the world outside of the deckers themselves is incredibly limited. The insertions of different characters didn't flow very well and just felt like padding for the book. Often times they didn't really introduce anything new or really at all connected to the main plot.

I was not at all invested in the relationship aspect or the world. The beginning especially dragged before Mateo met Rufus.

By the time I got to the end of the book I wasn't really sad, I was just happy the book was over.

This kind of book may be for some people, but that does not include me.

This is easily one of my favorite books. I found it so easy to read and so easy to dive into.

I loved how the main characters, Mateo and Rufus where completely different from each other but found hope and a chance in one another. They both helped each other in their own ways. I loved them both so much.

<The ending broke my heart. Apart of me was wishing that they would prove the system wrong and get out safely and still alive. I hoped that they would grow old together. I knew it wasn’t going to happen but I really did wish for it. I think that’s what made the ending sadder>

I feel like a lot of people misinterpreted the meaning of the book but from my understanding it’s about not being able to do everything in one day. It’s about not being able to live your life in a single day because there isn’t much time. So instead of living in fear you need to get out there and live because you don’t know when it’ll be your last.
I think this book carries a big meaning behind it.

Overall I found this book so beautiful and the language was amazing as well. I felt like I was listening to two teenage boys talk not two boys talk as if they are adults. They sounded like normal teenage boys  as there wasn’t this formality to it which made my love for this book grow.
