I enjoyed this book but found it to be too fantastical. I found so many things hard to believe. Perhaps someone could have such incredibly good luck. Perhaps one might find her horse in a stream without an Indian in sight after everything is destroyed. Perhaps one might getaway from the armed French and Indian who would readily give up pursuit of a lone young woman because they were drunk - or she was too fast (it wasn’t clear why they gave up), you know, in her dress and all. Perhaps one might pass a tribe of Indians who would simply laugh and continue on their way. Perhaps one would be taken in by a family who gave her all new clothes and offered to provide a dowry and help her secure a husband - out of the goodness of their heart. Perhaps said family - the husband being a judge - would then help her escape after she is accused of witch craft. Or perhaps this is an instance of a modern author wishing things weren’t as they had been and some young girl might have such experiences in 17th century Puritan America. Good reading - for a fairytale.

Beautifully written historical fiction with strong female character. Reflective, rich in biblical imagery and symbolism, hopeful even in the midst of suffering.
