an interesting glimpse into the psyche of a young woman whose bleak and boring life has led her to unorthodox high fantasies as compensation, and the consequences of those fantasies coming to fruition. the casualness of her morbid imagination casts the story in a darkly comedic tone that blends with the plot as it evolves from simple character introspection into a crime thriller.

All throughout this book I kept wishing I’d read the content warnings before starting it. I kept reading because I wanted to know more about Eileen’s story but it’s such a rough read :/ The author’s other books are comedies compared to this one so maybe either skip this one or just go in prepared!

picturing these characters and the scenery was (mostly) fun. reading this book was like eating an entire cake in the dark: greedy, revolting, indulging. i couldn’t help but love her, eileen, in all her holden caulfield -esque depravity. fair warning though: this is not for those with a weak stomach. moshfegh’s debut is an instant classic.
