Enjoyed the beginning of the book more than the end. There were a serious of questionable character decisions that seemed mostly made just to drive the plot along, especially in the genre of “1 minute of communication could have solved this”

Original. A compelling cast of characters. Mystery and threat. A journey where the end is always uncertain. It has a certain type of magic coupled with the momentum created by an author who writes beautifully. Full of wonders

3.5 stars.

In theory this book is right up my alley, and it started very strong. I have seen criticism of a slow start, but I was flying through it. Brooks established the ensemble cast, shrouded with curiosity as to how each member fitted into the puzzle of the train and the wastelands.
About halfway through, the story begins to unravel. Whilst her initial character work was strong, I don't think Brooks managed to build her surreal Siberia as strongly as the book warranted, and at that point the threads began to unravel.

Too slow for anything to happen but when things do happen, they are not intriguing and for the most part it’s boring. I did enjoy reading about each character’s story but I do wish that the main story had more to offer.

Interesting ideas and world-building; the characters are a good set for the story, and the story works—but. It. Does. Not. Flow. I was never drawn from one scene to the next, never sensed any forward momentum. Since there is a dreamlike or hallucinogenic aspect to the characters' experiences, not having forward flow became frustrating, which I never desire in a read.
