This book reminded me of the film annihilation. They both gave off a tense, unnerving vibe which the book excelled in with the way it described the environment and animals. This was one of the books strong points.
One of the books not so strong points were the characters. They were fine but I didn't feel strongly towards any of them. It could be because there were 3 POVs so I didn't really have time to get attached as you'd move to someone else's perspective each time. The characters could have used a little more fleshing out.
I also felt that the characters reactions and actions were sometimes just to move the plot along, rather than being consistent with how they would act. For examplethey've been told how dangerous the wastelands are and how careful they have to be, but when the train is changing, no one really seems to panic. No one fights back or insists on doing anything differently, they all start dancing. Also at the exhibition when the letter from Artemis spills out and is written over the ceiling. How on earth would you know that's going to happen?! And why make the child the captain at the end? I disagree that she was the catalyst, she just happened to be friends with Elena.
Overall the book was fine, but I'm not sure how it will hold up during a reread as the mystery's won't be very mysterious.

I was immersed with the world in and outside the train. It felt like a cozy fantasy because of the setting, but it was very tense. Loved the writing style!
