I don't know why I read/finished this book? It wasn't bad, I just found it quite boring and foreseeable and couldn't relate to the characters at all.

I appreciate the message of "be yourself, no matter what anyone says" though.

Obviously I'm not the target audience, however I think 12 year old me might have enjoyed it, therefore 1,5 stars.

"She was elusive. She was today. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to a corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew."

a lot of this doesn't hold up in 2023, primarily the utter manic pixie dream girl-ness of stargirl herself and the implausibility of the mica high groupthink. (and leo lowkey stalking stargirl at the beginning.)

but despite all that, stargirl held its magic for me. i just love stargirl and archie. the prose is simple, but beautiful. i can't express the way reading about "disappearing," the students as awakening frogs, and the desert descriptions make me feel.

basically: this is all unrealistic and stargirl is more of a plot device than a person. but when i read stargirl as an 11 year old it made me want to be weirder and kinder, and isn't that what really matters?

3.5 or 4 stars
