The Redbreast is the third instalment of Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series. I have read quite a few in this series, admittedly not in the correct order. These can be read as stand alone novels, or in series order as I will be doing going forward, mainly for the main protagonists story.

The Redbreast follows Detective Harry Hole as he investigates a series of seemingly unrelated murders, uncovering a web of conspiracy and betrayal that spans decades. Nesbo masterfully weaves together past and present, blending historical events with a modern day crime investigation. This unexpected combination adds depth and intrigue to the plot. Nesbo’s research is evident, as he seamlessly integrates historical facts and figures into the narrative, creating an enriching reading experience.

One of the strengths of Jo Nesbo’s writing is his ability to create complex and believable characters. Harry Hole, is flawed yet highly relatable, making him a compelling lead. We witness his journey as he navigates not only the dark corners of the criminal underworld but also his own internal struggles and personal demons. The secondary characters are equally well developed, their stories intertwining with Harry’s, adding layers of depth to the overall narrative.

While the book may not be flawless, with a few minor pacing issues and occasional narrative detours, the overall experience was undeniably thrilling. Jo Nesbo’s writing is addictive, and The Redbreast is no exception. Whilst this wasn’t my favourite, The Redbreast is a solid entry in Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series, offering a gripping tale of murder, conspiracy, and redemption. While the novel’s ambitious scope and dark subject matter may not be for everyone, fans of Nordic noir and gritty crime fiction will find much to enjoy in this atmospheric

Took a while for me to get into the character, but I loved him by the end. Flawed, like all good fictional detectives are.

Started a little slowly, and not all of the threads are wrapped up at the end, but very engrossing once the momentum built.
