I can understand why a lot of Sanderson fans don’t like this book. It is very different from all of his other Cosmere works. It is a very much more simplistic plot (at least the first book in the series) and is much more straight forward in the plot it follows. I can understand why they don’t like it but for me it was exactly what it needed it to be and that makes it a great read in my opinion. This book (one can argue even the series) is not out to be this big epic fantasy story that has a vast cast of characters with intricate interweaving plot points. It accomplishes it’s aspiring steampunk/western atmosphere with the lawman that is solving the case in front of him.
The characters, as usual for Sanderson, are definitely a standout. I love Marasi and how smart and fearless she is. I love Wayne and how layered he actually is. And Wax is ok, lol.
I also loved the small nods to how the Era 1 characters are ingrained in the lore and religion of this world 300 years later.

Im really enjoying the steampunk/western/mystery fantasy vibes from this series! Wax is such a True Lawful character. Also the fact that Lessi was a Kandra the whole time!!!!! That’s crazy!!!!! Lots of mystery and intrigue and excellent character development all around!
