This is the first book in the Dericott series, with Delia and her seven brothers as the main characters. Delia's brothers are falsely accused and imprisoned and she must come to their rescue - which is difficult for the noble daughter of an earl. She feels her stepmother is behind things but can she find proof?
This is a fast paced story with not a lot of character development. Delia appears naïve, trusting men she met with her brother's lives and safety. There is a heavy religious theme throughout the books with biblical quotes and the characters often praying for help or a sign. This is a good retelling of the six swans folk story *also known by other titles and is an easy read.

Moderate: Violence
Minor: Sexual assault
There is one minor instance of attempted sexual assault (it does not happen). There is some violence in the book but it is not overly gory or graphic but it does occur in a few areas in the books.f_r_e_d's review against another edition

I love any book by Melanie Dickerson. She is just so good at retelling fairytales, and mixing all of the good happy parts with the adventures of the time. And like any other Melanie Dickerson book, I loved this one too. Part of the reason that I think this one just wasn't it for me was the fact that I have never read the story that it is based on. Another reason was that it just felt really slow. It was a constant teeter totter of happy, sad, happy, sad. And although that's fine, it just got stale as the book went on.
Thats the only bad thing I have to say about this book. I would read it again.

I have pretty neutral feelings towards this book. I feel like the author didn't take enough risks in the plot, and when the plot finally picked up towards the end, solutions just fell from the sky. It's a quick read if you're in the mood for something on the lighter side with a happy ending. The romance is predictable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
