Dark and disturbing but a good thriller.

This book sucked me in. I love all the clues Libby and Miller find that unlocked pieces of their Chelsea house history. Having three characters’ perspectives was great. It called into question how accurate each characters’ memory is/isn’t. how do they perceive and process their trauma? How does it affect them as adults?
Moreover, I enjoyed Henry’s perspective. He’s an enthralling complicated mix of a traumatized child, suppressed gay man, dark sociopath, self aware yet unapologetic, but also a manipulative narcissist. I feel connected to him, but also disgusted.
I did particularly predict some of the mystery and twists but some of them I didn’t due to the characters’ varying accounts. That is why the book doesn’t get a full 5 stars. Overall, really enjoyed it.
The book ends on a nail biting cliff hanger which I enjoyed but it also left me feeling tense.
I didn’t really enjoy the addition of Libby and Miller’s love story. It was subtle but I thought it was unnecessary. However, I did like that Libby’s adoptive mother had a chaotic lifestyle, and death of her adoptive father left her with anxious tendencies.
Though Lucy gets away with murder, it’s also closure for her. I feel okay with it even though murder is wrong. Her ex was trying to rape her, he was physically and emotionally abusive, and he was a criminal. In a sick way, it’s justice for Lucy and signals the end of her terrible life in France.

I had quite a good time with this book, and I kept picking it up to find out more of the story as it unfolded. I'll definitely look at this author again. I appreciated the unease of the book and not being sure if the narrators are reliable. Trauma all over the place.

It was a slow start but once it picks up, it moves fast. The story flows well once the three POVs become more closely intertwined & the connections are more clear. There are many twists & turns along the way, & the story continues to develop until the very last sentence. Libby’s POV is an often needed relief from the heaviness of the other two, much less tense but still moves the story forward. Many characters felt flat or aligned with stereotypes that I’d expect more from a book written earlier than one written in 2019, but I still ended up reading most of the book in one sitting so I was definitely invested.

“I know it sounds like it was all just a terrible disaster. Of course it does. Any situation involving four dead bodies is clearly far from ideal” - Lisa Jewell

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - 4 Stars

Definitely NOT what I expected going into this book. It was a lot more intricate and bizarre, I was left guessing throughout. I really enjoyed how the last few sections pulled everything together so perfectly. 📖

It’s been a while since I picked up a thriller, but the SPEED at which it was this has reminded me why I adore them. The chapters are SO short, I couldn’t stop! Lisa Jewell did a brilliant job with the writing, so easy to read. 💨

I will say, I started this as an audiobook, and I did get lost a little. The book jumps to different character and time period each chapter. Whilst driving, I couldn’t keep track quite as well as I’d hoped so I switched to the book, and read it all in 2 sittings 👀

I ended up LOVING the way the story was told. Such mystery and cliff hangers throughout. It’s a pretty dark read, the ending was perfect and I’m so excited that a sequel is being released in July! For me, this book was worth the hype.  😁
