I really enjoyed this book. Baldacci's character, John Puller, really reminded me of Lee Child's Reacher, a favorite of mine. I hope he makes Puller a recurring character in future books.

Fast-paced thriller. A rating of 3.5 from my side.

I bought this book on Kobo by chance, and started reading it without expecting too much from it, but was pleasantly surprised. I know some people say this is a complete rip-off of the Jack Reacher series, but having never read a single one of those books, I can't really comment on that.

I ended up liking the John Puller Jr. character a lot and I think he has great potential to sustain a series of books (so much so, that I've already bought the second book of the series). the only thing that bugged me, though is that at least the Kobo edition had lots of spelling errors and sometimes even words missing, or out of order. it's like the book wasn't even proofread. That's the only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 4.,

Plot or Character Driven: Plot

Why would a military colonel who was about to retire be murdered with his family in a small West Virginia town? Why is the army’s Central Intelligence Division so interested in the murder—interested enough to send one of their very best into the community to unravel the mystery.

John Puller is indeed among the very best, and he is chosen to ferret out the clues to the murder of the colonel and his family.

Things get worse when a cop whose job it is to guard the crime scene is also murdered inside the house.

Before this book ends, Puller is on the hunt for terrorists with nuclear expertise, and his prison-confined brother holds the key to his success.

This is hugely satisfying, as are all the books in this series, and it’s a great suspense-filled read no matter when you undertake it.

Puller is one of the best characters that I have read in quite sometime. Loved the plot line and the action.

4.5 stars. Great mystery. Really liked the main characters. Will definitely be reading book 2. (Some language)

Boom, boom, Americana, bang, bang, fried eggs, and terrorists.

Exactly what you would expect it to be.

The writing is not terrible, but nor is there ground-breaking stuff here. This is the vein of every other special-agent, covert operative, 007-esque 'but more realistic' action-based thriller out there. It's fairly formulaic, but hey, that's how these authors manage to pump out so many books for their insatiable fans. I know I am droning on in a bit of a negative tone, but please realize I'm not saying that there is nothing of value here - it's a perfectly decent book. I was entertained by trying to bring all the pieces together; Baldacci does this very well. I'm just never going to be a devotee to the genre, but will still dip my toe in the water now and again for a change a pace.
