challenging dark mysterious fast-paced

Very slow on action. Nothing exciting happened until the last 20 pages or so.

Not my cup of tea.

Military mystery. Not just a murder mystery to be solved, there is so much more going on. Lots of military acronyms thrown around, so that could distract from the story if you're not used to it.
The main character John Puller is an army CID Warrant Officer. He's strong and tough. I've read his other books, and I enjoy his series.

I'm wondering where the series is going to go after this.

This book is pretty great. It's clearly Baldacci coming up with a way to write a Jack Reacher novel.

But to just call this a Jack Reacher novel isn't fair. This has more Military Business in it, and a bit of Military Intrigue as well.

The book opens with the killing of a family in a small coal town in West Virginia. Then it grows, and grows as the story keeps getting more complex and more plots are revealed.

Ultimately there is a conclusion which is both terrifying to consider, and worrying to have as the first book in a series. If this book opens with the events that are presented in it, and it's only supposed to escalate as the series goes on... well... it's going to go nuclear very soon.

Still, this was very good and I thought it was an interesting conspiracy that was at the center of it. Good treatment of all the characters and most of the characters were well written and interesting.

There were some pretty good red herrings throughout the book and it ultimately makes for a good start to a promising series.

Edit: there is some straight up Agatha Christie drawing room mystery stuff in this.

Another John Puller novel. I like this character. He is flawed and heroic and principled. Love the way David Baldacci writes a thriller.

Puller is quite the tough guy. And an effective CID.

I had trouble putting this down, but I didn’t like the end. Boo!

28 chapters in and all I know is people were murdered, which we knew would happen. Too slow paced for me. The Will Robbie series was better

These audio books pull me in. This had an interesting plot and several twists. When I’m running or walking the dogs, the plot is fast paced enough to keep me engaged.

excellent read

Well written thriller that carries the expected flawed hero, love interest, and dysfunctional family formula well. Story doesn't really lag and has enough action to hold your attention.
