This was a reread for me and while the story is well-written I hadn’t remembered the gratuitous sex/objectification of women.
The only woman who enjoys sex is brutally murdered on the page.
. While some of this may be colored by the  unearthing of allegations against the author, I’ve thought similar things about books written in the same time period where the author doesn’t have any allegations against them.

Fundamentally misunderstands the intricacies and complex relationships between pantheons that make up American folk beliefs. Lack of recognition of modern practitioners and worshipers for ancient pantheons- both in the Americas and "old world". So much sexism. The old religions are written using Christian propaganda of them and not an understanding of how people actually interacted with the gods in a pre-Christian world.
I was ready to clock out after that first aside with the goddess, but I wanted to give it another chance since so many people have recommended it (included ancient history professors). I'm just so disappointment.

I’m convinced this whole book is a one-man con and we all got played.

I ended up liking this book by the end but the docked stars are for the pace of the book and the fact I’ve tried to read this 3-4 times before unsuccessfully and finally pushed through this time. The mythology is neat, there’s definitely some misogyny, and the character development is the main character is well done but takes forever. The middle felt like a nothing happened.  All that said, that should show how good the rest of the story is to get it up to 3.5. I know people who love this book and would argue its merits until they’re blue in the face, but I probably won’t re-read it

Perhaps I wasn't the right audiance for this book. Its was strange and strangely slow at times

Edit in light of the news about Neil: The kiss in this now has a different meaning and gives me an icky feeling. I see why I didn't like it.
