I know the allegations published by Tortoise Media are making many, many people think twice about the author. I can't deny i love this book, and I can't blame anyone for refusing to pick it up. I might receive Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel to anyone who wants something with a somewhat similar feel, and a much less divisive author.

This was a reread for me and while the story is well-written I hadn’t remembered the gratuitous sex/objectification of women.
The only woman who enjoys sex is brutally murdered on the page.
. While some of this may be colored by the  unearthing of allegations against the author, I’ve thought similar things about books written in the same time period where the author doesn’t have any allegations against them.

It was a pretty quick read for me. When I was reading I struggled to put it down. I haven’t experienced that with a book for awhile. I couldn’t predict the twists the book took and I loved the creativity. It was easy to get wrapped up in the mythos and legends in the book.

American Gods feels like a journey into the heart of the American cultural fabric. Narratives of Irish sun gods, slaves and immigrants are interwoven into small town pitstops and dinners at funeral homes. It's medium paced and offers a variety of narratives to stimulate multiple avenues. Good story about meaning, symbols and finding yourself. Mythology and mystery along the way keeps it interesting.

the most magical realism book i’ve read and I absolutely loved it. characters were so distinct and memorable despite there being a whole lot of em. I did enjoy our look into the world of the gods and just doing side quests with interesting characters. but I wasn’t a huge fan of the last but plot. but the ending was really good. tied everything in a nice bow even if it wasn’t super satisfying. would’ve been a 5 star if it weren’t for that few chapters where the plot felt rushed and like it was a forced grander meaning behind everything
