IMPRESIONANTE.

This book was stressful from the beginning to the end, literally every chapter had my anxiety racing. The main character pissed me off bad and I was trying to be on her side fr because I get why she makes the decisions she does. However, there were still moments where I couldn’t believe what I was reading because shit was getting sloppy at some point like I needed her to be serious. So warning ig: if you don’t like stressful situations in books, be prepared because that’s literally the entirety of the book two.
Also: I think the pacing of this book was better than the pacing of the first book, probably because we’ve gotten past the introduction to the plot.
All that being said, I loved the book still, and once again, the ending devoured. Seated for book three!

3.5 stars, this was a good sequel but also was disappointing following book 1.
I spent majority of this book wishing I could smack the hell out of Kiva and the other half just waiting for Jaren to find out the truth because it was inevitable. I felt like for Kiva to have been in prison for so long, she just kept making terrible choices. Or should I say she wasn’t really making choice but more so a passive character when choices popped up. I found myself not rooting for Kiva as much as I should have. Everything that happened was so obvious yet Kiva would act surprised and go on and on about how torn she was.
Some spoilers!!!
(Mini rant:
I wanted to scream and pull my hair at how Naive and gullible Kiva was. Her sister was throwing up red flags from the start that screamed she was a liar and evil and Kiva was like oh no she doesn’t mean it I have to betray these people who I love and who love me for an ungrateful crazy sister…
I really wanted to know what Kiva’s plan was. She didn’t like the idea of ruling a country and found it boring and express full, her brother gas no interest, and her sister seems ruthless. Everyone else loves the current royal family and kept gushing about all the good they do for the kingdom. I’m like so we’re gonna over throw it based on some story. Which for someone left out of the loop for a decade Kiva showed no signs of wanting to know what was going on around her. No critical thinking going on in that head of hers. Especially when she would get sensitive information and then just blurt it out to people. I’m like girl why are you stressing me out like this????).
Continuing on. I will say Zuleeka was a good villain. It was obvious from the get go. But Kiva was so darn slow with the uptake and thinking things through, I couldn’t even be mad at Zuleeka for succeeding in her plans. Everyone else was just like nah she’s not that bad while homegirl is using dark magic and killing people. The moment Kiva got the full story from granny she should have come clean about everything, at least to Caldon.
The royal family was fun getting to know. The family nights and the banter. Jarren, I loved that he was open and honest about what he wanted. But at the same time in like Jarren baby maybe let’s not go telling kingdom secrets to your crush???? Like sir that’s beyond stupid. Otherwise the romance was predictable and I was happy with that. Yay to no love triangles!
Caldon saved this book for me. For him to be a secondary character he has such personality. He was a delight to read.
Things def picked up towards the end of the book and it was another cliff hanger I can’t wait to read and see how book three concludes things. In hoping Kiva does a ton of groveling (cause she really ruined things for everyone) and grows a spin. No pity party for her. She’s got some growing up to do.
