I don't know how to rate this book. I was so frustrated by Kiva the entire book. She is not the same smart character from the first book that survived Zalindov. Maybe if we would have had more background story with her siblings I would have understood more her loyalty to them when they clearly are the worst.
Jaren is amazing and I wondered at times if he was too perfect. I also blazed through it and will definitely be reading the last book to see how it all wraps up.

Still fairly young adult. Continues to have too many modern phrases that take away from the fantasy. Same for dealing with addiction, depression etc reads as self help. Would’ve liked more world building and magic system building

lynette does a really great job of big cliffhangers with wild twists, but the twists stress me outttt. the only thing ab this one that kind of didn’t sit right with me was just how unquestionably trusting jaren was, like i get he’s in love with her but not even a little hesitancy to spill all his family secrets.. seems very unlikely. otherwise, fantastic sequel, i’m very excited to get into the last book.
