This is the story of Trevor and his school assignment of finding something he can do to change the world. It's a work of fiction but the movement exists for real now. Good to read aloud in grade 4 or for upper intermediate.
I loved the idea but not really keen on Catherine Ryan Hyde’s writing style.
I read this before the film version was released. I borrowed the book from a friend, and I was very mad at her for not warning me about how many tissues I would need! The story is beautiful in its simplicity. It makes you realize how our actions can have such a far-reaching impact, and how much better our world could be if everyone just put forth a little effort.
Not the best writing, but I liked the idea...a boy comes up with the idea that you do good for people and instead of being payed back, you pay it forward...pass along a good deed to someone else.
I would have given this 5 stars if it weren't for the ending. I just thought it was too predictable and a little cliche that he had to die. It was like no one would pay it forward unless he did them all the huge favor of getting himself killed in some senseless act of violence. But now suddenly thousands show up to his funeral and mom begs them to pay it forward, because of what he did. I personally think that is the "movement" was already causing such a difference in people's lives, then it would have kept going.
I also remember reading this around 15 years ago, so I was a little surprised at the sex and more adult content. It wasn't that it was over the top, not at all, just that I didn't expect it from a book I read it junior high.

I only read this book because the movie version with Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt was filmed at my school several years back. It was cool having film stars on campus and seeing how movies are made from an outsider's perspective. Notice I'm saying nothing about the book -- the book and movie were crappy.
Very touching book about a boy's dream to change the world through acts of kindness. I saw the movie a few years ago & had just found out recently that it is based off of a novel. I'm glad I found this book.
