Still just a so-so story here. Not as good as the last, but there is more traveling which is fun. Also, we get to see the main characters actually interact with each other, which makes a refreshing change from the first book. I start to feel that things work out a bit to simply for these girls in their adventures, and there really isn't much question of where the story is going (though you could spend some time trying to decide who the villain is to be).
The story is told through the diaries which is an interesting way to do it.

This book took a bit longer to get into than its prequel; it was not written in the form of letters back and forth between Celia and Kate, but rather in alternating journal entries by the same. The action took a bit longer to really get going - but once it did it was quite a good adventure.

The second installment is not nearly as enjoyable as the first. The story switches from letters to a more diary style, and a lot of the charming writing style is thus lost. The character of Kate is also pretty much unbearable in the second book. I still love Cecy - that's a girl who gets stuff done.
While it is by no means terrible, the change in style and quality is enough that I have no desire to pick up the third one.

This was not as much fun as the previous one. I can't put my finger exactly on what was missing, maybe a lot of it had to do with the way it was recounted? Without them writing to each other you didn't get as much of the girls actual friendship, just a lot of them talking about their husbands. Also, Kate seemed more timid in this book, and I don't remember Thomas getting on my nerves as much. This book pretty much picks up exactly where the last one left off, so it's weird the characters feel so different to me. Maybe that's all in my head, though.
I adored the first book. I love how it was written in the form of letters between the two cousins, but the story itself was fully engaging.
This was different. First, the story is being told not through letters, but as journal entries by the cousins. Letter writing between the cousins wouldn't work this time because they are traveling together on their wedding tour.
I don't think that is the only reason for it not grabbing me the way the first book did. This felt like it was plodding along sometimes. It was still a fun book, but I didn't feel like the characters were living up to the way they were imagined in this book. They lacked the dimension they had previously.
I still ultimately enjoyed this book, but I'm not sure I would read a 3rd book in the installment without following reviews.

I quite enjoyed this book. It wasn't as ingenious as the first with the letters being written back and forth but it had a lot of perks. It was full of adventure and tender moments. I think I may be more in love with the characters than I was before. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Love it!
As most reviewers are pointing out this is a fun read if you liked the first book and just want a sequel. If you're looking for a good story with a riveting plot this might not be for you.
Not quite the charm as the first one, but still enjoyable enough to continue reading. I found myself reaching for it instead of other books I've been reading (always a good sign). The cousins are now married to the men they met in book one and are taking a double honeymoon together and find themselves embroiled in another mystery. I didn't really like all the magic in this one, but was more interested in the relationships and the historical aspects. The characters were more developed which was nice. Kate and Cecy no longer seemed identical though James still seems pretty two-dimensional. Thomas however is the spitting image of Elizabeth Peters' Emerson. Which is a good thing.
