3.51 AVERAGE

Took me a little to get into it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. Not as good as some of Ashley's newer works, but still a good read. :)

Entertaining and sometimes amusing. Not as wonderful as I expected considering I usually love Jennifer Ashley's books. There was a lot going on in this first book, which is understandable when trying to introduce lots of characters that will feature in the later books.

I liked Alexandra, although if she were my friend I'd lock her up for her own good. I never found myself lusting after the hero or the villain. That alone made the book deficient in my opinion. I need to be able to have a hot lusting sessions as I read about the hero/anti-hero.

My one biggest complaint - the iTunes ebook covers. They were god-awful! Ugliest damn things I have ever seen. This may have impacted my opinion of the book. Every time I had to look at the cover I cringed.

The old adage never judge a book by the cover could have easily been applied here. I could have judged this book by the awful cover and passed it by, missing out on pretty decent entertainment. Glad I moved on passed the cover.

This is just a fun, fast, light read. This is the second Jennifer Ashley book I've read and I'm officially a fan now. This is a much lighter read than The Madness of Lord Ian.

The best part of this book is the love between father and daughter, it was very sweet. I thought the ending was kind've convoluted which is why it's three stars instead of four.

I usually don't care much for pirates. Pirate-speak makes me want to stab someone and I've found that "pirate" is often used as shorthand for "overbearing asshole who does whatever he wants."

Boy is there none of that here. What is here, though, is a sexy next door neighbor who has a really hard time buttoning his shirt up all of the way (hee), an exceptionally sensible and smart heroine, and lots of crafty pirate intrigue. There's also some very fun shipboard sexytimes and lots and lots of unabashed pirate nudity.

Oh, naked man ass, how I love you so.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and plan to read lots more by Jennifer Ashley

Thought this seemed vaguely familiar, and eventually realized I'd already read it, but by that point I was so far in I figured I might as well finish. I'm downgrading my rating from 3 stars to 2 though -- my overwhelming feeling about it is "meh." The writing was mediocre with lots of typos and errors. The problems were resolved too easily and I just wasn't motivated to care about anything that happened or any of the characters. Really I shouldn't have bothered to finish it -- it was just a waste of time. I was hoping to get some sense of resolution that would make the reread worth it but I just found myself caring less about the characters as the story went on.

3.5 stars.

This book was just ok to me. It seemed to drag. Plus I was hoping for real pirates and the sea, but it mostly took place on land. A bit disappointing.

3.5 but rounding down - I just can’t give it four stars.
This book has a ton of action - it’s very quickly paced without much filler. That is both a pro and a con - it’s hard to put down, but it lacks the quiet moments for the relationship to develop. There’s also a secondary relationship that was more appealing than than the primary one.
The hero and heroine are fine - they sort of have character arcs but not much. The heroine at times was almost Too Stupid To Live, but at least she took action.
The character of Burchard was an odd one.
In many other books they would have been a lead character. Here they were used as a villain worse than the other villain, and then exposed as a woman. It’s not clear from the text whether they saw themselves as a man or a woman. Personally their reason to hold a grudge was a good one. We’re told that they are horrible because they pirated slave ships and killed slaves. Then they’re unceremoniously killed. I found the entire treatment of this character at best clunky and offensive at worst.

I really enjoyed this book. There was comedy, action, and romance. I have to say that I loved that the heroine kept getting asked to be married by like four different men. I can't wait to start book two in the series.

Fun, piratey goodness.
