I had read a couple of Brother Cadfael novels before, but not this one. Enjoyed very much: enjoyed the foray the Brothers made into Wales, and the points about the differences between the English-born and the Welsh-born. It starts when the Brothers at Shrewsbury decide they need their own saint; and they go to Wales to retrieve the bones of Saint Winifred to exalt her higher than the locals have been able to do. Of course, the Welsh people are not terribly happy about their local saint going away ... and murder follows. Brother Cadfael is delightful as he figures out a solution that makes everyone happy in the end, even if some of the participants are unaware of the full extent of the solution.

Fun Medieval murder mystery. The interesting part is how Brother Cadfael determines the murderer.

Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael historical mystery series has been on my TBR list for a long while and “A Morbid Taste for Bones,” the first book, is a great beginning. Set in the 12th century, Welsh-born Brother Cadfael is a monk and an excellent detective, serving with his brothers at the Abbey in Shrewsbury, England. Cadfael is a late comer to the monastic life and has had quite a colorful life, which adds so much to his character. I actually found all the characters to be highly believable and the story is full of humor, sarcasm, and a little irreverence!

I love Brother Cadfael (pronounced cat-phile, but I don’t mind that they mispronounce it in the audiobook). What a well-rounded character! He is in turn a match maker, a mystery solver, a deeply religious man, and also very down to earth. He relates to real people. So glad there is a whole series!
