I can't wait to tell everyone about this book, but I have to wait because it isn't out yet. Thank you so much, Abbie, for approving me as an ARC reader! I loved The Otherworld so much.
I am not sure I have ever been more frustrated with a book in my life. Long story short, if age gap romances between an 18 year old (as of like 2 days might I add) and a 28 year old don't bother you... If you love a main male character who only likes the female main character because she is "pure and innocent and undefiled"... If you are okay with parents holding their (adult) child hostage one a deserted island... If you don't mind a character undressing another character while they are unconscious and studying them and it being treated as totally fine ☺️... You should totally pick up this book. I am considering burning my copy or perhaps throwing it off a cliff. Please save yourself and anyone else who is considering picking this up.
Ahhhh I'm so excited for this book!!! Pre rating it because I'm doubtless it's gonna be a 5 star read ;)
I think Abbie Emmons has turned into my favorite author. As with 100 Days of Sunlight and Tessa and Weston: The Best Christmas Ever, she’s created another fictional masterpiece with The Otherworld that I didn’t want to put down.
Because I loved her previous books so much, I was worried that I wouldn’t feel the same about this one, especially since it’s completely different, with it's own unique storyline and characters. Rest assured: it’s incredible. I often read books that I feel mediocre about, whether they are too long, too dry, or, unfortunately, just forgettable. The Otherworld is none of that: it’s a feel-good story that has you rooting for the characters, thinking deeper about love and life, and leaves you feeling happy and light after reading.
The plot was well-paced, the events were interesting from beginning to end, and there were a ton of moments throughout where I couldn’t wait to read what happened next. If you’re unsure about starting this book- take the plunge. You won’t regret it.
Thank you, Abbie Emmons and NetGalley for sending me a DRC in exchange for an honest review.

Dnf at 40%
Never in my life did I think I'd be dnfing a book by Abbie Emmons but here we are. I honestly couldn't stand how creepy and uncomfortable the book and one of the love interests were making me feel.
I also read some reviews and realised that people who have a problem with the things I do ended up finding way more problems and things that I know I don't want to read about so dnfing is the best choice for me.
So here's what's happening:
The 10 year age gap can honestly be acceptable for me of written well but the fact that the naive and innocent mc just turned 18 makes my stomach churn. Nope. This girl hasn't talked to or met a single person other than her father so for course she's enamoured with Adam and interested in him. That's okay, that's somewhat logical? But Adam is fucking creepy. He's 'falling' for this girl who's not like other girls because she lives alone and talks about philosophy. Seriously, no other girl is ever interested in talking philosophy with you? Then he goes on to say she's 'pure and unpolluted' and I have let out a full body shudder at this point. I cringed so hard while reading this.
And top top it off they fall in love within the first 40% of the book, AFTER 3 DAYS OF KNOWING EACH OTHER. I as it is have an ick of falling in love with the first person you meet/is kind to you but on top of it Orca is literally a child with no knowledge of how these feelings go and Adam is a fucking predator. He literally says that he's nearing 30 and she just turned 18 so it's wrong but continues to pursue her anyway. Ew.
Can't make myself read this.
I'm so disappointed? Literally don't see why Adam couldn't have been written as slightly younger or Orca aged up a bit? But it still wouldn't have affected the not like other girls narrative I guess. This book is sadly a hard pass for me. I'm so disappointed, I was expecting much better from Emmons.

This book is different, which is the first thing that jumped out at me. The premise is unique and I’m a big fan of the author so I was a little concerned this book couldn’t live up to the hype for me, but those fears were unfounded. It was everything I wanted and more. She built a beautiful world via detailed descriptions and gorgeous language. I really love her style of writing, from the pictures she paints of their world to the complexity of the characters. Orca is a sympathetic character from the moment we meet her because of the isolated, lonely life she’s lead. It hasn’t been an easy life but she’s positive and resourceful and brimming with energy to expand her horizons, although she knows her father doesn’t support her wanderlust.
She quickly develops a friendship with Jack as she searches for his lost brother and gets close to Adam as well once he finds her. I’ve seen the term love triangle used but it really doesn’t fit here in my opinion because for me there was never any question about which brother she belongs with, although at times I worried she might choose the wrong one. This verged on insta-love but it works here because of the unique circumstances. I loved these characters and really enjoyed everything about their story. I’d like to thank the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGallery and Abbie Emmons for the ARC,
The Otherworld is an entertaining book which deals with dreams, love, friendship, and family.
I picked up this book because I loved the cover. It is dreamy and beautiful. I also decided to read it because it took place on an island. Abbie Emmons' writing is poetic and pleasing to read, minus the swearing. The descriptions were realistic, authentic and I felt like I was living in the lighthouse with the Monroes.
I think the different points of view were well written, it gave depth to the story to look into each character's mind. I also really like Orca's quest to find herself, she is a good-natured, deserving character, and I loved her relationship with her dog.
But, I was not a big fan of the love triangle because the love story felt a bit rushed, awkward, sometimes uncomfortable. I also did not enjoy the relationship Orca has with her dad. He is a complex character, for sure, but I think Orca's dad behaviour is not tolerable.
3.5/5

There were aspects of this book that I loved. The vibe was amazing. I really was interested in two of the conflicts ... the rest were really difficult to feel like they mattered, or were resolved very quickly . I did not love most of the characters . They were very flat. The moment I thought Orca had a personality, she became this pure idol that boys fight over because they refuse to communicate for reasons that just don't seem logical at all. Also, the love story was fun at first, but became a little annoying with conflict that quite frankly didn't make sense. I think this book could have been really good, but just fell a bit flat. Maybe it just needed a little more perspective from others to make it shine. It doesn't feel like a finished product. I really wanted to like it because I get the sense the Abbie and I share similar interests and I love watching her videos. I'm just left feeling a little disappointed.
