This book is not as comprehensive for death metal as one would hope.

A miserable book--poorly written and carelessly slapped together. It reads like the 3rd rate liner notes of a 2nd rate label sampler. I finished it only because I was going through a metal phase and was devouring every relevant book in my path.

The least sexy rock 'n' roll book you're likely to read.

I am predisposed to liking this extensive history of death metal, but nonetheless I am invigorated by the depth to which I feel vindicated and acknowledged that this sort of music meant something to people.

Choosing Death stays focused on a subset of some of the most prominent bands in death metal and grindcore. Some fans of the genres may wish for more, but there is a lot within the book to enjoy.
