I had a lump in my throat for most of this book. I felt Queenie's pain so deeply. At first I thought this might be a love triangle story, but it is oh so much deeper than that and touches on so many important topics - promiscuity and sex, miscarriage, mental health, family, childhood trauma, abusive and toxic relationships, racism, dating, friendships, cheating, work, forgiveness and confidence.

The only reason this isn't a 5 star read is that it was very boy focused. Even when Queenie was getting better, she still went back to online dating and going home with a man on the first date. It was very heteronormative!

a while ago i wrote a review on letterboxd for the movie A Fantastic Woman that said: "painful from my head to my toes. i'm still uncertain as to if i think cinema making you This uncomfortable is productive or not... we'll see"

i feel almost the same about this book. there is a lot of suffering, suffering i know happens in real life. we do get some development after all, and it ends on a hopeful note, but my stomach is still turning. don't know how to feel about it yet.
