I don't think the poor writing really did the myth justice. Beautiful art, though.

This is a very bright and colorful book and that is what drew me to the story which is an Ashanti folktale from Ghana. The father accidentally finding a glowing orb after his sons save him but can't decide who to thank the most so it becomes the moon? I thought that maybe he would split the glowing orb up for all the sons to share but the God of All Things decides to hang it in the sky? The story that I was expecting to teach a lesson about sharing and appreciation gets wrapped up without a proper conclusion and is used to explain an unrelated celestial object. Maybe some of Anansi stories make better sense.

Cushion is our favorite spider son.

african folktales are the sweetest thing... i will always tell the story of anansi!!!

This book is a telling of the story of Anansi the spider which is a myth of the Ashanti people of Ghana. The spider has 6 sons, each of whom has a special ability. Anansi gets into trouble, and it takes all of his sons working together to rescue him. The last part of the story is about Anansi attempting to reward his sons by giving them the moon. Of course, there are 6 sons and only one moon which poses a problem, which is solved by not giving any of them the moon.

Parts of this story are okay, and I understand that it is a traditional tale. I almost feel that the "moon part" and the "saving dad" part are two separate things, hence my two star rating.

I think that you could use this in class to discuss working together. We all have different strengths and talents, and sometimes we all have to work together to accomplish a task or to form a effective classroom environment.
