Good YA book about fighting injustice and antisemitism. Read for work book club.

This book addresses the sometimes questionable assignments that well-meaning teachers give to students; in this case, it is to become a Nazi during the Wansee Conference. While I found the cast of characters to be very typical YA/high school stereotypes, I came to really like the 2 main characters, Logan and Cade, and I am encouraged by this new crop of books that show how teens can impact change in their school/community. It's one of the better trends to happen in YA lit in recent years. It wasn't just a happy ending, but it was redemptive and showed growth in many characters and the community. I liked it more once I had a few days to think about it all. I think it is an accessible book for teens to explore what their moral boundaries will be and to think critically about what they are taught in school and what they hear in the news. This book also struck a chord with me because I actually gave one of the assignments when I taught 8th grade that the author lists in her afterword; this, of course, now makes me shudder.

Terrific book about the voices and impacts of teachers and students when studying hard history and the Holocaust. By writing chapters in the POV of many characters, it provides nuance and depth to a complicated situation surrounding a terrible assignment. Highly recommend, especially for teens learning how to harness their voice and agency.

Could you stand up for something you believe in, even if you have to do it alone? Logan and Cade take offense when their teacher, Mr. Bartley, assigns a debate on Hitler’s Final Solution, the extermination of the Jewish race. When Mr. Bartley refuses to change the assignment, Logan and Cade don’t back down. Soon, the class and the community become divided as true colors and closely kept secrets are revealed. Based on a real-life event, this book explores what it means to stand up for what you believe in.
