A bit boring by the standards of Cain's masterpieces. He seems a bit past his prime, trying to gussy up the same old tales with the Lolita angles with modern lingo. Cain seems outdated here, even if the prose is breezy and economical, but the plot has a lot of absurdities and holes in it, and you have to question anyone who believes that a deer is no match for a dog (even against wolves, a deer weighs twice as much and can do great damage with those hooves).

It may be an ok beach read, but would probably offend the modern generation, and that status is a big drop for the great Cain.
