It’s not that I didn’t like this book — it’s powerful, raw, and unflinching. Jennette does an incredible job of capturing the horrors she was raised with, and it also made me reflect on some of the ways I was raised. Her voice in the audiobook especially adds an extra layer of authenticity and heartbreak.
That being said, it’s not an easy read, particularly for someone who borders on the verge of emetophobia. Jennette goes into very descriptive detail about her struggles with bulimia, which, while important to her story, can be very triggering or uncomfortable for sensitive readers.
Overall, it’s a brave and eye-opening memoir, and I admire Jennette for sharing her truth. I gave it 4 stars only because the content, while necessary, was at times difficult for me to get through personally.
Graphic: Child abuse, Eating disorder, Mental illness, Vomit, Grief
Unbelievably raw and honest. I can feel how therapeutic writing this was for Jennette and I am so glad that she was able to tell her story.
