For the descriptions alone this was wonderful. A solid sense of place and painterly writing. There's a hypnotic quality to immersing yourself into writing like this, and while it is full of depth and nuance, particularly in the moments between Bridgit and Ethan, it can also skip along the surface of things, and give the illusion of depth. Sometimes I wonder if scenes were too focused on the aesthetic at the expense of depth. I appreciate that the writer may simply have been choosing to write with a light touch and a sideways glance rather than anything too pointed.

fine. pretty writing (with the occasional odd choice of words thrown in because, well, lyrical style i suppose) but this didn't give me much except a reader's block.
some parts were actually quite good, which made the fact that this didn't feel purposeful enough more frustrating.
great book if you're just starting to develop some empathy/sympathy through reading, but i already have that.

The beginning of the book describes a flood in a way that almost makes you feel like you’re drowning too. After that, the writing started to wear on me. Why use 2 words when 10 will do? Some of the writing is beautifully descriptive but it gets bogged down at times. At the very sad end I wondered whether it was worth the read.
