This book is 600 pages long. Other than the final 100 pages, this book lacks any coherent plot. It simply describes, in painstaking detail, every single meal Fitz eats over the course of an entire year, while interspersing painfully slow character development. Reading this book should be banned under the Geneva Convention as a form of torture.

This is one of my all time favorite fantasy books and, I think, the best in the Farseer trilogy. Hobb does an excellent job of putting you in the head of people whose lives are shaped by traumatic events. As someone who enjoys slower-paced books, even I find the pace of this series to be a bit slow (that's just how Hobb writes). That being said, the tension increased dramatically towards the end, leaving off with a fantastic conclusion. There are several thought-provoking quotes in this book that I still think about, and Nighteyes has to be one of my favorite characters in all of fiction. It's definitely not for everyone, but I highly recommend this book (and series) to anyone looking for character-driven fantasy.

After reading two other Robin Hobb books, I knew the ending was going to be brutal, but wow. That was a lot. Yet I can't wait to read the next!

Beautifully written, character-driven fantasy world full of court intrigue, forbidden love, mysterious friendships, and a magical bond with a wolf.
