It took me awhile to get into this book, but once I was on board it was very compelling. Interesting premise and storytelling. If you like gothic storytelling, you'll like this one.

I didn’t really connect with this book and it had just a few too many negatives for me to want to continue. One of my biggest issues was that it just felt underbaked. It could have greatly benefitted from being edited more, especially since it felt like everything was told to me directly instead of letting the reader figure things out themselves more.
None of the characters really spoke to me either. Just got a general meh vibe from them all, giving me no real desire to continue. And that just really sucks because I think there are some really cool ideas there. Just again underbaked and not fleshed out enough.
The world itself was interesting, with lots of open concepts of rebirth of the main characters and the psychic powers of the police force. I also think the concept of having what seemed like one person split across multiple bodies, but none of them felt like full people for that exact reason I think. Which is a shame.
Overall I just didn’t feel like I cared enough about anything or anyone and so I put it down.

This book was simply not for me. It was beautifully written, the plot is compelling in theory, characters are well built but I found it so incredibly boring I found myself half asleep afer every few pages. It was a real struggle to finish it and I suppose I'm happy I did not have to dnf it but I also slightly regret not doing just that.

This was a wild ride. I am genuinely very excited to re read this one day.
I think this book absolutely nailed it as being a unique and dark political fantasy. The political intrigue is overflowing!
My only real complaint is that in some sections of the story seems to cut short. It feels a little clunky and I feel this is a big reason a lot of people are getting confused. You are not spoon fed information and you kind of just have to vibe sometimes until things start to come together. The ending I feel was also a little rushed.
I read this via audiobook (which was fantastic) but I believe I would have had a much easier time understanding some plot points if I was physically reading the book and I could go back and re read some parts. In saying that, I was just having such a fun time vibing with the story and getting to hear all the drama.
(Please make sure you read the trigger warnings. This book was definitely darker than what the synopsis suggests it is.)

The book explores the inner lives of the protagonist and her splintered selves deeply, and shows a world where women have no official political power but still fight for their lives and use the power they can wield. Overall I found it a bit too slow and written in a way where too much was written between the lines

This is possibly the greatest fictional book I’ve ever read. I am now a diehard Sara A Mueller fan just the way she writes characters, the plot, the fantastical elements is so good!
DNF- the world building could’ve been really fascinating but I simply could not follow it. Typically this would be a good thing, but it jumped right into the story with no explanation of these pretty complicated concepts of the bone ghosts.
