omg. this book. it's really good. Really screwed up, but really good. The story was so morbidly fascinating I constantly needed to know more and everytime I thought I had it figured out it changed!

could have done without the whole Phelan and Justice thing.

Too much fantasy and why did the women need to be sex workers. This is a fantasy world and they could be anything.

this is a book about abuse and the cycle of abuse. it’s miserable and sad and everyone is awful. also the world building is not good. maybe i would have enjoyed this more if i was reading it physically, because there are so many characters and plot threads that it’s difficult to keep track.

i think, even in books that have all unlikeable characters, there needs to be a character you can root for. but in this book, peoples intentions are strange and mutable. personalities aren’t very distinguishable and it’s not clear what defines the relationships between characters.

i really like the concepts introduced here, and it’s super original. it’s murkily written though and it needed much better sculpting.
