I really really enjoyed this book and will be reading more is she published more novels.
I loved that you were constantly piecing together facts. This is not a book you can turn your brain off, you really have to pay attention. You constantly have questions and have to piece things together then you get a revelation. Then you have more questions. And you continue that pattern until the end of the book.
It was a very interesting look at trauma and what happens when your stuff that trauma down instead of facing it.

Ahhh so maybe a 2.75. This was a confusing mess at times. I wanted to love it, but it was such a chore to even finish. Still gathering my thoughts on this one, but I don’t really recommend it.
4.5 stars
Ok, so I definitely see why this book wouldn’t work for some people, and I see the critiques people are making. But something about it just totally clicked for me and I really, really liked it—it was just exactly what I wanted and needed right now and good lord the aesthetics of the book were made for me. so, like, super strong 4.5 and wouldn’t be shocked to see it in my top 5 faves of the year. If you know me and you know my vibes and you’d like a book with many of those vibes, pick it up!!!!

lol i hated this. my god. what a complete fucking mess.
Macabre and intriguing this political drama slash fantasy is set in brothel populated by bone ghosts, and I liked it.
It tried to do a lot in a few pages and, for the most part it succeeded, but it could have used some expansion. It somehow condensed a trilogy of 500 page books full political maneuvering into a scant single novel. Grandaddy GRRM disapproves.

Honestly it’s been a while since I finished this and for a while after I was a bit bemused by this one and how I felt about it. I got it because I heard about it pre-release and it just sounded cool. I am very glad I did try it but I also think this is a weeeeird one.
The concept here is a woman split up into ghosts of her personality who can become corporeal and live in the world. These bone ghosts as they’re called work with our main character in a pleasure house, servicing and serving the customers of the house. Charm is the main character who runs the house and the bone ghosts are part of her, but there is also The Lady and Charm has to care for her as she naked the bone ghosts.
We also follow a plot against the emperor and the lengths that Charm will go to try to understand what happened and who is corrupt. I liked the various characters and personalities of each of the bone ghosts and the other characters here. It definitely felt unique and fun but I also found sections a bit confusing and weird so just be wary it’s one which I am not sure will suit all. 3.5*s
