LOVE this concept. This book is very, very subtle. It sneaks up on you and bam! Allegory. Boom! Two disparate thoughts run into one another. All wrapped up in weird Frankenstein lab meets ghost whores meets political intrigue. A spectacular example of “show, don’t tell.”

So good.

It really pulled me along most of the way, but lost me a bit at the end

I feel just as confused at the end of the book as I did at the beginning. How did we get here?

The premise of this book was very interesting, there is a historical feel with a bit of fantasy and mystery. But I feel that it got confusing often, and dragged a bit.
Charm is the madam of Orchard House, where the female workers are boneghosts made from a part of her personality (I think) by using bones from the bone tree and a lab behind the Orchard House. Charm is tasked by he emperor to find out who is behind a treasonous act, and along the way she unearths secrets and memories that have long been buried.

Different but worth it

I wouldn’t say it’s the easiest read, it definitely took me awhile to get used to each character and how they came to be. The story is unique and I really enjoyed getting to see the main character grow!

I really enjoyed reading this book. The world is interesting and the world building takes it time, but it keeps you interested. I don’t want to give anything away, but the book keeps you in the dark about a lot of things and slowly reveals them. It’s not the type of book to plainly spell it out.
medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

There is a lot going on in this book and I felt it would have benefitted as a series instead. The the pacing wasn't great but the story was interesting enough that the conclusion felt okay and made it feel like a decent read.
emotional funny mysterious medium-paced

i don’t know how so much can be happening in a book and yet it’s still incredibly boring. it’s also very confusing it felt like i was reading the sequel or something. way to many characters to keep straight and way too long
