“I love this me I’ve made myself into. I’m proud of me. And I damn well won’t give me up to you.”

In this book is a dark world of politics, mad princes, and bone ghosts. Where a powerful emperor who controls seemingly everyone with an irons grip is murdered. But in all the chaos that ensues, the underlying story and mystery starts to show through. Not that of the emperor. But that of Charm, Pain, Pride, Desire, Justice, Shame, and the Lady.

And that story of their resilience and their self discovery was not what I thought it would be. But I was invested. And at time seething because of the hurt and trauma that they went through. But by the end thoroughly satisfied by who they became.

I cannot deny that this book had an incredibly interesting and unheard of plot. The story was incredible. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars rather than 5 is because some parts of the book are highly political, which is something I struggled to follow along with. As well as it written in an older more Victorian era lingo which was also a bit confusing in some parts for my highly American self. Other than my ability to understand. Which seems like a me problem. The book was incredible.

4.5 Really interesting and unique conceptual political fantasy.

I think I wanted to like this book?....

Honestly, stellar premise and excellent cover but this story? all over the place and the characters....kind of forgettable. And this is a big a** book too so chile. I just wanted a more cohesive story and I didn't get that.

This book has an interesting premise and I like the way it portrays how people can sometimes “split” or compartmentalize parts of themselves to cope with trauma and challenges. But the plot was very confusing. There were too many things happening at once, and they were being tied together quite haphazardly in the third act. It was just too convoluted for my liking.
