Having seen the Soderbergh film several times I thought I had a feel for the story, but wow did they have to glaze over the confused mind of Kelvin as he struggled with the return of Rheya. I give this 5 stars because the ending left me with a nice cool depression. Now on to the 1972 and the 1968 versions of the film.

very unique. definitely not for everyone
A story with some interesting and rather unique ideas about the nature of alien consciousness and what it might be like to attempt contact. However, for such a short book it still felt a bit plodding, especially the long sections where the protagonist reads from books on "solaristics". Those parts felt quite self-indulgent, as if the author was reluctant not to include all the world-building details he'd come up with. The book also, probably purposely, fails to answer many questions that come up — not just on the core ideas, but little things like who Snaut's "guest" is. I understand that this adds to the helpless, confused feeling the book is going for (and mostly achieves) but it's still annoying.
Overall, only recommended if you already like this sort of thing.

Great if you ignore how much of a sausage fest it is.

Some great ideas, but surprisingly boring for such a short book. My heart sank every time he went to the library.
