I really wanted to like this book. I think the premise is very interesting and the characters are interesting, but the execution just didn’t work for me.
The characters are really well fleshed out. Their reactions to what’s happening on the station are believable and it feels like you get to know them. The chapters where you follow the characters through the strangeness worked really well for me.
The problem for me is that there are chapters where Kelvin is telling you about the history of the science done on Solaris. And these chapters are exposition dumps that just read like encyclopedia entries. I found myself not really caring. And these chapters are also the longest chapters. So it felt like my reward for reading through a character based chapter was homework.
The main idea of the book is that if you lack a common reference point with someone, then it’s impossible to communicate or understand each other.
