Hmm…where to start? I’ll say, I think the cover was gorgeous and tricked me into thinking this was going to have some real meat (ba dum tch) to it. Foolish of me. I did give it a single star instead of zero bc it was so fast to read, and I kept hoping it would get better.

Yes, there’s gore. Yes, there’s sex. Yes, there are shocking things! Was any of it done well? No.

There was no attempt at atmosphere and there were no vibes, so this didn’t even tip the scales of making me squeamish, or horrified. The main character sounds like he’s a little boy half the time. Even as satire, this just doesn’t have a lot to it. Where is the commentary? This is not a horror so much as an edgy comedy.

The prose was childish and some stylistic choices were annoying. Another reviewer summed it up perfectly:
This book is basically a teen edgelord trying to be edgy and shocking while broaching philosophical topics…The problem is the philosophy addressed is about as deep as a can of tuna…

If you want to read something for shock value’s sake with baby’s first examination of being a social outcast, fine. You do you. Check those trigger warnings and then check it out. But there’s not a whole lot going on here beyond a teenager’s edgy splatterpunk attempt at being deep. Go girl, give us nothing.

This is the most unhinged, terrible, vile, try hard, AWFUL book I have ever read. This book made me want to make a donation to the NSA and sign a petition for more government censorship. Somebody should check this guys computers and then we should lock him in a stockade and throw tar at him.

And none of this is in a funny way + I am not an oversensitive wimp who can’t handle ~gore~

I don’t know why you would write this (actually I do. It’s very clear this author thinks he has a deep and unique POV that we should all care about. And also hates women). There’s so much blatant misogyny and explicit glorification of rape I can’t believe any editor actually sat through the drafting process.

There isn’t even some moody, obscure metaphor for this book to hide behind. It’s literally some dude penning his extreme taboo jack off tumblr fantasies about violating dead women (and children. And babies) (but only the hot ones) and existing “outside the system” while lusting after manic pixie dream girls

this is just like. shock factor porn for edgy incels. i wanted it to be more because i’m so desensitised and want something that will make me recoil and uncomfortable, and while the subject matter itself is enough to do that the writing is just so.. cringey? (“so I figured I’d bite the bullet and just do it, Nike-style” LIKE CMON) and i hate that word. i don’t know. this could have been so fucked up and engaging but instead it was just fucked up and embarrassing. so many of the positive reviews for this book stem from ‘well it’s fucked up and appalling because that’s the point!’ yes we know, but that doesn’t mean we don’t also deserve good writing and an actual plot over just the same gore porn for however many pages. extreme horror can be good! this is unfortunately not an example of that.

Somehow I’m more upset by the MC’s “I’m not like other girls” vibe, throwing fits when called normal or told he still unfortunately is a part of society than by his nefarious deeds.

I think I understand what Chandler Morrison was trying to do with the first person POV and the narrator's tone, but it came off as a YA fiction monologue most of the time. Every time the narrator would go into his "I'm different than others/I'm better for this/I'm weird and fucked up, etc" monologues, I kept hearing that scene from Riverdale, the "I'm weird. I'm a weirdo." Overall, I wish Morrison had done more research into psychology and forensic pathology before writing.

I wish Morrison would have given us (readers) something meaningful to ponder while reading, something that made all the fucked up parts of the book significant. Right now, it all feels two dimensional, like it's all there just for shock value.

That being said, if you are looking for a short horror read that will astonish you with all the fucked up things a person can do to another, it's worth giving this book a read. There were times where I legitimately brought my hand over my mouth in horror.

A book where cannibalism and necrophilia are the least taboo things depicted should not be allowed to be boring, but this book is painfully boring. It immediately hits the point of diminishing returns where you can tell the writer has nothing to offer but to shock you, so nothing they write is shocking anymore. Even though the plot centers on only the most deplorable acts imaginable, it’s genuinely mind numbing to read. The writing is way too bad to make you even care what’s happening. I can’t stress enough that I’m not bothered by reading the content in the book, I have a strong stomach, but I cannot forgive writing this bad
