This was a charming circular story about generosity. Oskar wants to give his mother the perfect gift. He buys a rose (perfect!) but an artist needs it. So Oskar trades for a paintbrush (perfect!) which he trades to someone else in need. Each time, Oskar gives away his gift and each time he gets something else that he thinks will be perfect. Really sweet, especially with the setting in "olden days" Vienna.

Oskar keeps trading up to get a gift for his sweet Mama, and his thoughtful nature is shown through various situations. The author's note reveals afterwards that many of those he trades with were famous Viennese citizens. Reads like traditional literature.

I loved the illustrations and the story was well-constructed and endearing. One boy makes other people’s lives easier through his easy-going nature and generous spirit. This would be a fantastic storytime book.

I liked the author's note at the end that explained Lodding's inspiration for writing the book. I am always fond of books with real-life settings that are so vivid it's almost like they're a character in the story. A gift for Mama takes place in late 1800s Vienna.

A lovely story about a thoughtful boy who tries to find the perfect birthday gift for his mama and is repaid for the generosity he shows strangers. The illustrations are beautiful, too.

In A GIFT FOR MAMA a kind young boy searches the streets of Vienna for the perfect birthday gift for his mother. When he sees a gorgeous yellow rose, he knows he has found the perfect gift for his mother, but a series of chance meetings cause the boy to trade away the rose and each gift he chooses to those in greater need. A beautifully illustrated read aloud story with lessons of kindness and love, A GIFT FOR MAMA is sure to enchant.
