Read during a SFSI shift along with [b:The Sexually Dominant Woman|654863|The Sexually Dominant Woman A Workbook for Nervous Beginners|Lady Green|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348972251s/654863.jpg|640965]. The Topping Book is much better organized and offers really excellent theory. I’m skeptical of these two authors--The Ethical Slut put me off open relationships for years—but I really enjoyed reading this.

Out of the topping and bottoming book, this one is, IMO, clearly more useful (and both of them feel like a generic guide rather than role-specific). Could be great if you are a newbie and/or you've just opened a kink checklist, seen some of the things there and was like "what is this?" and then "how the hell do people get off this??". Awfully outdated at times though, but then again, times were different.

Wish they would make an update to be more gender inclusive in addition to some other things like the internet and where kink’s place is in society these days, but still feels like the best entry book for laying it all out simply.

This was a light an enjoyable read. I knew much of the information before starting but I wanted to read it anyway for a few reasons: I have the accompanying Topping Book and wanted to compare them, and I also wanted to see if the writing style was similar to Dossie and Janet's other book, The Ethical Slut. This book is very similar to that one in style and voice. Reading it is kind of like chatting with encouraging aunties who want to introduce you to kink. I like it. I got a laugh from the chapters about the internet, as the New Bottoming Book was released in 2002 and being online was a completely different experience then than it is now. It was fascinating to hear a bit about how kinksters used to meet before everything went online. Some of it was very woo but I'd expect nothing less from former hippies on the west coast.

If you've read the New Topping Book, this one reiterates many of the same concepts - from the opposite side of course. Still, it's probably enough to read one of the two.

Really lovely read! This gave me some unique perspectives on BDSM and kink that I hadn’t thought to consider before. It made me reflect on scenes I had done and what I wanted to try or work on. I’m going to move to the Topping book next!
