I really liked this book. It wasn't perfect, but I still had a great reading experience.
What I liked...
The romance! I love Rune and Gideon's relationships so much. I love the tension, banter, and devotion. It's swoon-worthy. Just love it!
What I didn't like...
This book felt very YA (which I can't fault the book because it claims to be YA). But it did affect my overall enjoyment of the book. It feels like it went down a couple notches on the maturity scale from the first one. What made it feel YA: the writing was pretty simple and spelled everything out for the reader. There really was no nuance or subtlety. The stakes were solved way too conveniently every time, and everything was wrapped up too quickly in a little bow. Also, I forgot at times that I was reading a fantasy because the plot was pretty weak and predictable. I didn't really notice any of these gripes while reading the first one.
All that being said, I still had a great time with the book because I love the romance so much I was able to look past my gripes as I was being repeatedly reminded of them during the read. The first book was definitely my favorite. But a fantastic duology as a whole! May reread at some point for the romance alone!
