A book that not only ensnared you in its plot but also seduces you with its mysticism and craftsmanship. The story that is slowly unveiled page by page with expert control and precision breathes life into this book like I have never experienced. It doesn't feel like you are a reader being told a story but almost as if you are Daniel himself stumbling through his early life whilst he sleuths for the mysterious Julian Carax.

This authenticity of character is not spared for Daniel alone for each of the characters that exist on the story are real, almost tangible and perfectly flawed as real people are.

Hands down the easiest 5 stars I have ever given, and hands down the easiest rccomendation I could make to an avid reader who won't shy away from 506 pages of pure heart gripping immersion.

I adore Zafons writing. He uses words to paint vibrant but also dark pictures amd makes it an incredible journey to read The Shadow of the Wind. However...did he really have to include incest? It's such a beautiful story, but that storyline just put a damper on it.

I loved this book so much. Lots of shocking plot twists and a completely unique story. While it was exciting and mysterious it was also a rather cozy read. It is beautifully written and is now one of my favorite books. I had the added fun of getting to read it while visiting Barcelona, definitely recommend that if you get the chance.

I hated how the author described women and only treated them as sexual objects to be oogled and owned. The male characters were sexist and gross and I absolutely could not stand Fermin. The people that Daniel "interviewed" told him literally everything they knew even though they just met him??? And he wanted to touch and kiss the women constantly - it was disgusting to read. I was interested in the story of Carax and what happened to him and who the devil was but I couldn't get through the actual book any longer and just googled the plot & ending.

Confused by the number of five star reviews on this. Did we read the same book? Although it has a couple of exciting parts, most of the plot is obscured by overly flowery prose. I just wanted the author to get to the point already!

And the misogyny... Ugh. I get it's set in the 40s/50s but there is literally not one female character in here that is described by something other than their beauty, youth, or fertility. Gross. And they exist solely to develop the character of Daniel, of course.

Also, the mystery is finally revealed by way of...someone writing it all out in a letter? Now that's a cheap writing trick if I ever heard one. Seems like the author didn't know how to wrap it up so threw this in at the last quarter of the book.
