I am head over heels for this cast of characters in this series. I love all of them and I desperately hope we get a book for every single one of them. This was a very good time and I enjoyed it very much.
I like the dynamic between him and August with August being a little bit more serious and studios but still also being capable of unpredictability and light heartedness. They aren't the exact stereotypical dynamic of a flighty arrogant character and abhorring serious character which I appreciated.
That being said I am having trouble reining in my deep sadness that this book was not about Matty and that it doesn't seem like the next one will be about him. Nico is not my favorite character with the way that he's a little brash and a little arrogant. He still has a good heart but I'm just not into the cocky athlete character type too much so I think I would have rather had this book as the third or fourth book in the series so I could have my favorites first.
There's also one part where it was very obvious that someone forgot to delete a sentence fragment and it got added to a paragraph that it didn't belong in so the paragraph made no sense. I also dislike that we spent so much of the book seeing Skylar as Nico's best friend and hearing about her pregnancy and then the epilogue didn't include Nico being obnoxious uncle who spoils Skylar's baby and that we never got an explanation as to why Skylar named the baby Nicky even though it's pretty obvious that it's named after Nico.
I did learn however that the Canadian version of Cliff Notes is called Cole's notes and it came 10 years prior to Cliff Notes.

I adore Brigham's hockey series' and each one brings us more loveable characters and interesting relationships. This one, though, hits a little harder with the medical trauma that Nico goes through and how August, a hockey referee who does not think that fondly of him in the beginning, stands by him . Things become ever so slightly complicated when a relationship between the two means a conflict of interest on the ice which could lead to both men being in a little bit of trouble with the league. Nico's health takes precedence over that with what he goes through, it's definitely not a story to step into lightly. Be sure to read the trigger warnings.
The relationship between Nico and August starts with a lot of banter, Nico making little digs and August repelling them. Then there is a connection, a moment together but before something more could possibly happen, Nico's medical issue makes itself known in spectacular fashion. August really steps up to the plate but maybe makes a mistep on the way there. That part becomes an interesting path as he stays by Nico's side to ensure he can mentally and physically recuperate, deal with an ever so slightly overbearing but equally loving family and get through the frustrations of a slow recovery time. They may have started out as non enemies but they come to rely on each other a lot, Nico bringing out the fun and ability to relax while August is an unexpected strong pillar of support and comfort.
A fantastic and well written story by the author. I love the emotional range throughout and even with Nico experiencing such a tough time he still has his flirty charm. The way August stands up for him with his parents is cute considering how scared he is by the situation they find themselves in and Nico's best friend/ex girlfriend is a lot of fun, especially as they banter together.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
